About
Animal therapy is a treatment used in a variety of settings to help several psychological and physiological disorders. Currently, animal-assisted therapy is being tested and used to help alleviate symptoms of autism, schizophrenia, and increase arousal behaviors in unconscious patients. Animal-assisted therapy is also beneficial for individuals suffering from loneliness, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. For these individuals and many others, the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was published to eliminate discrimination of anyone with a disability including an emotional disability in search of a home.
Currently, college students are able to utilize the Fair House Act to gain accommodations for animal-assisted therapy in their designated housing. But there is a large number of students who would largely benefit from this type of therapy but cannot have access to it based on their situation. College students are busy, financially unstable, and mobile making the lifestyle to own an animal difficult. But with a central Emotional Support Animal Center near campuses nationwide, they would have access to this beneficial animal assisted therapy without having to commit to having an animal.
